Yanmar Receives Approval For Hydrogen Fuel Cell System, Paving Way For Greener Marine Power

63

Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd. (Yanmar PT), a key subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, has achieved a major milestone with its GH320FC Maritime Hydrogen Fuel Cell System receiving Approval in Principle (AiP) from classification society DNV. This approval marks a significant step toward the adoption of zero-emission solutions for the maritime industry, offering a clean, flexible power source suited for a variety of vessel types and operations.

A Versatile Fuel Cell System for Diverse Maritime Applications

The GH320FC system is engineered for flexibility and scalability, allowing easy installation on a wide range of vessels such as coastal ferries, inland cargo ships, and port service vessels. It supports modular configuration, enabling multiple units to be linked in parallel to meet different power needs. This adaptability makes it particularly suitable for operations in low or zero-emission zones, especially across Europe where clean energy mandates are growing stricter.

Backed by Yanmar’s experience with earlier hydrogen fuel cell deployments—such as the operational coastal ferry in Japan—this system positions Yanmar as a leader in practical, sustainable marine energy solutions.

Collaborative Push Toward Decarbonization in Maritime Sector

The AiP granted by DNV, a global authority in ship classification, affirms the safety and technical soundness of Yanmar’s hydrogen fuel cell system. DNV praised the innovation as a highly efficient and scalable solution that aligns with the maritime industry’s urgent push toward decarbonization.

Industry leaders from Yanmar and DNV emphasized the importance of such technologies in meeting international climate goals and ensuring sustainable maritime operations. This collaboration sets the foundation for next-generation vessels powered by renewable hydrogen, marking a vital shift in marine propulsion.
