Deendayal Port Authority Joins Methanol Institute To Boost Green Fuel Bunkering In India

43

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, India, has taken a major step toward sustainable shipping by joining the Methanol Institute (MI). This strategic move aims to advance green fuel bunkering infrastructure, especially bio-methanol, and position the port as a key player in the global transition to low-carbon marine fuels.

Building Green Fuel Infrastructure for the Future

Located on the Rotterdam-Singapore Green Shipping Corridor, DPA is actively developing facilities to become a zero-emission fuel bunkering hub. The port is exploring bio-methanol as a viable marine fuel and is investing in logistics, infrastructure, and partnerships to support this transition.

Some of DPA’s green initiatives include:

  • A 1MW green hydrogen demonstration plant

  • Introduction of battery, hybrid, and fuel-cell-powered tugboats

  • Energy-efficient cargo handling technologies

Additionally, DPA has issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) for methanol bunkering and partnered with DNV for a gap analysis, showcasing its commitment to safe and efficient adoption of alternative fuels.

Global Collaboration and Maritime Decarbonisation

By joining MI, DPA will now engage in global discussions around methanol as a marine fuel, contributing to knowledge exchange and policy development. The port is also launching a Centre of Excellence for Green Maritime Fuels to foster collaboration between industry experts, startups, and academia.

DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh emphasized that this collaboration supports India’s vision of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goals. The partnership will also open doors to new collaborations with fuel producers, vessel operators, and regulators, accelerating maritime decarbonisation.
