Vertom Group, a prominent Dutch shortsea shipping company, has reached another milestone in its push toward greener shipping by launching and christening Vertom Joyce, the eighth vessel in its cutting-edge LABRAX series. The ceremony took place on April 10 at Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in Kampen.
Vessel Specifications and Propulsion Technology
The Vertom Joyce is a 7,280 dwt multipurpose dry cargo vessel measuring 118.60 meters in length with a beam of 14.30 meters. It boasts a spacious full-box cargo hold with a capacity of 329,700 cubic feet. A key feature is its diesel-electric propulsion system, designed to reduce energy consumption while improving operational efficiency. This system supports Vertom’s goal of delivering cost-effective and environmentally responsible maritime logistics solutions.
Leadership Perspective
Arjan de Jong, CEO of Vertom Group, emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, stating:
“From designer to shipyard, from suppliers to sailors, every contribution made this vessel a reality. The MV Vertom Joyce is more than a feat of engineering—it reflects our shared values and the trust-based relationships that define Vertom. These values will continue guiding our growth with the same commitment to quality, integrity, and mutual respect.”
LABRAX Series – A Benchmark for Sustainability
Vertom Joyce is the latest addition to the LABRAX series—a fleet of twelve vessels designed to lead in sustainable and efficient maritime operations. Previous ships in this series, including Vertom Patty, Vertom Cyta, Vertom Tomma, Vertom Anne Marit, Vertom Anette, Vertom Lisa, and Vertom Willemijn, have demonstrated high performance in terms of fuel efficiency and emissions reduction. The LABRAX vessels also feature future-ready designs that can accommodate alternative fuels and advanced power sources.
Fleet Expansion and Future Deliveries
Beyond the LABRAX series, Vertom is expanding its portfolio with further orders aimed at sustainability. This includes four pink 10,700 dwt geared multipurpose vessels under construction at India’s Chowgule Shipyard, scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028. All will feature diesel-electric propulsion systems.
Additionally, Vertom ordered twelve 5,600 dwt diesel-electric vessels from Chowgule. The first of this batch, Vertom Rita, was delivered in late 2024, with the second vessel expected in May 2025.
With the launch of Vertom Joyce, Vertom Group continues to solidify its position as a forward-thinking leader in sustainable shipping. Through its innovative fleet design and investments in diesel-electric propulsion, Vertom is setting new standards for environmentally conscious maritime transport.
