French shipping line CMA CGM has taken a 35% stake in Egypt’s October Dry Port, on the outskirts of Cairo, in its strategic growth in the east Mediterranean. This enhances CMA CGM’s presence in Egypt, supplementing its current facilities at Alexandria and its planned terminal at Sokhna, reports Lloyd’s List.

Strategic Partnership and Investment

With the acquisition, CMA CGM has entered into a management deal to build out the rail and logistics platform of the dry port. The 2023-completed facility is linked to all of Egypt’s seaports, offering a vital logistics hub that aims to relieve the congestion at the congested Mediterranean terminals.

Improving Rail and Logistics Infrastructure

The dry port serves as a major part of CMA CGM’s strategy to enhance intermodal solutions in Egypt. Through enhancing rail links, the company is set to encourage the growth of low-emission intermodal solutions that will be able to improve cargo movement efficiency within the country.

Commitment to Egypt’s Supply Chain Growth

Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice-President of CMA CGM, described the deal as a “unique opportunity to foster the development of low-emission intermodal solutions in Egypt through efficient rail connections.”

She further emphasized that the investment reflects CMA CGM’s long-term commitment to Egypt’s supply chain growth. “It combines beautifully our worldwide maritime network to and from Egypt, our investment in the terminals of Alexandria and Sokhna, with the capacity to offer door-to-door efficient and competitive solutions to our Egyptian customers, opening a new, more sophisticated, vision of Egyptian supply chain development,” she added.
