Gateway Terminals India (GTI), also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Vadhvan Port Project Ltd. (VPPL). This MOU aims to jointly launch a Skill Development Programme specifically designed for the port sector. This collaboration signifies a commitment to enhancing the workforce’s skills and capabilities within the region’s port industry, reports APM Terminals.

Strategic Collaboration

Gateway Terminals India (GTI) has announced a strategic collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Vopak India Private Limited (VPPL) to launch a comprehensive skill development training initiative. This program aligns with the Government of India’s “Skill India Programme” and is specifically designed to empower the local community, enhance their employability, and foster greater diversity within the port operations sector.

This initiative emphasizes a strong commitment to both diversity and inclusion, intending to create a readily employable workforce. This directly supports the Government’s objectives, as outlined in the Union Budget 2025, to boost employment generation. The training program will be conducted at the GTI premises and will provide vocational training and technical expertise tailored to the specific needs of the port sector. The curriculum will equip individuals with job-ready skills in key areas such as Safety, Maintenance, Planning, and Equipment Operations.

Revolutionizing Workforce

This collaborative alliance between Gateway Terminals India (GTI) and Vopak India Private Limited (VPPL) aims to revolutionize workforce development, positioning skilling as a fundamental driver of India’s economic growth and aligning with the government’s vision of “ports for prosperity and ports for progress.” By leveraging GTI’s expertise in port operations, the administrative support of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), and VPPL’s broader developmental objectives, this initiative seeks to create substantial and lasting improvements within local communities through skill-based training.

The program will feature an industry-relevant curriculum delivered through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical, on-the-job training experiences. Key aspects of the program include inclusive training methodologies designed to reach a wide range of individuals, specific diversity initiatives aimed at increasing representation, and apprenticeships that will offer stipends or compensation to participants.

The core objectives of this comprehensive skill development program are to:

  • Educate and train individuals directly impacted by port development projects (Project Affected Persons – PAP).
  • Provide industry-aligned, high-quality training to promising candidates, equipping them with the necessary skills for employment.
  • Significantly enhance the participation and engagement of women in various roles within port operations.
  • Actively promote greater diversity across the broader port industry workforce.

Shri Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), expressed his strong support for the initiative, stating, “I wholeheartedly congratulate GTI for taking up this crucial skill development program. This initiative not only provides valuable opportunities for our local community but also demonstrates a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion within the port sector. We are proud to partner with GTI in this endeavor, which will undoubtedly contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of the local community and foster a more representative workforce.”
