Damen Shipyards Group has entered into a new agreement with Arena Offshore A.S., a Turkish firm headquartered in Istanbul, for the local construction of two Stan Tugs 1606. The vessels will be built under Damen Technical Cooperation (DTC), a program through which Damen shares its shipbuilding expertise and technology with clients worldwide, allowing them to construct proven Damen vessels at third-party shipyards.
The design and license for the Stan Tugs 1606 will be provided by Damen, while Arena Offshore will carry out the construction at its facilities in Istanbul. Once completed, the vessels will be made available for sale in the maritime market.
Tugboat Legacy and Innovation
The Stan Tug 1606 is a well-established and versatile vessel that has been refined over generations. Measuring 16.76 meters in length and 5.94 meters in beam, it delivers a powerful 16 tonnes of bollard pull ahead. Known for its durability and flexibility, the vessel is suited for a range of operations, including towing, mooring, pushing, and surveying.
Arena Offshore, established in 1998, is recognized for its work in shipbuilding, vessel brokerage, and chartering. The company has successfully delivered over 50 newbuild vessels for global clients.
Mutual Trust and Economic Impact
M. Ömer Ince, owner of Arena Offshore, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership:
“It is a great honor and pleasure for us that Damen has chosen and trusted an external company, Arena Offshore, for the building of two Stan Tugs 1606, which is one of its most well-known models. As a reflection of this trust, we are excited to complete the construction of the two units in Istanbul to Damen’s quality and standards.”
Bram Kouters, Managing Director of Damen Technical Cooperation, also shared his perspective:
“We are very pleased that the good experience and collaboration we have had with Arena Offshore has led them to construct their own newbuild Damen designs. It’s also gratifying to see DTC gaining traction in Türkiye. Damen firmly believes that by sharing its designs, knowledge, and technology in this way, we can contribute to the construction of higher quality, sustainable vessels all around the world. Additionally, DTC provides economic benefits, giving a boost to local maritime suppliers and widening employment opportunities.”
This partnership underscores the growing reach of Damen’s DTC model, promoting high-quality shipbuilding while supporting local economies and skilled labor development in Türkiye’s maritime industry.
