Port Houston’s latest figures indicate continued strength in breakbulk cargo, particularly steel and project shipments, supporting the regional energy and manufacturing sectors.

Container activity recovering

Steel import volumes experienced a significant 26 per cent surge in March compared to the previous year, with year-to-date volumes up 10 per cent at 1,069,279 short tons. This performance underscores the port’s crucial role in facilitating the movement of essential materials for key industries. Total tonnage across Port Houston’s public facilities reached 13,202,844 tons through March, a 2 per cent decrease year-to-date.

Meanwhile, Port Houston’s container activity in March recovered, reaching 386,864 TEUs, a 7 per cent increase compared to March 2023 and marking the port’s busiest March for containers on record. This rebound follows a February impacted by fog. Year-to-date container volumes at the public terminals reached 1,068,695 TEUs, remaining essentially flat compared to last year’s period.

Port leadership is closely monitoring ongoing bilateral trade negotiations for potential impacts on supply chains.

March container volumes were largely driven by a 14 per cent increase in loaded exports, totalling 152,857 TEUs and also representing a record March for this category. Loaded imports saw a 2 per cent increase in March. Total loaded container volumes year-to-date are tracking just 1% below last year’s figures.
