  • Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has delivered a new LNG-fueled Capesize bulker, Verde Heraldo, built for JFE Steel Corporation.

  • The vessel will operate under long-term transport contracts, supporting both sustainable operations and reliable supply chains.

  • This marks another key step in MOL’s goal to reach net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, aligning with its Environmental Vision 2.2.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) held a naming and delivery ceremony for its newly constructed LNG-fueled Capesize bulker at the Saijo Shipyard of Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Ehime Prefecture. The vessel, ordered for JFE Steel Corporation, was named Verde Heraldo—meaning “Green Pioneer” in Spanish—by JFE Steel President and CEO Masayuki Hirose. MOL President & CEO Takeshi Hashimoto, along with other executives, attended the ceremony.

Operational Role and Route

The Verde Heraldo will be deployed under long-term transport contracts, supplying raw materials to JFE Steel’s production mills. The vessel not only enhances logistical efficiency but also supports environmental sustainability through the use of LNG fuel, which produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional marine fuels.

Following its departure from Saijo Shipyard, the vessel will receive LNG via shore-to-ship bunkering at Osaka Gas Co., Ltd.’s Senboku Terminal in Osaka Prefecture. From there, it is scheduled to begin its journey to Australia.

Commitment to Sustainability

MOL continues to advance its decarbonization efforts as part of its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” which targets achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The adoption of LNG-fueled vessels such as the Verde Heraldo reflects MOL’s proactive stance in immediately deployable technologies to reduce its environmental footprint.

The delivery of the Verde Heraldo represents another milestone in MOL’s ongoing strategy to expand its eco-friendly fleet and promote the transition to cleaner energy in global shipping operations.
