  • CSSC Hudong Zhonghua has delivered the CMA CGM SEINE, the first of four upgraded 23,872 TEU LNG-fueled Megamax vessels ordered by CMA CGM.

  • These vessels are an advanced version of the original ‘Jacques Saadé’ class, named after iconic Parisian landmarks.

  • With this addition, CMA CGM now operates 70 LNG-powered ships, representing the world’s largest LNG container fleet.

French shipping giant CMA CGM has officially received the CMA CGM SEINE, a state-of-the-art container ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Built by CSSC Hudong Zhonghua, the 23,872 TEU vessel is the first in a new series of four enhanced Megamax ships based on the original ‘Jacques Saadé’ class design. The delivery marks another step forward in CMA CGM’s commitment to LNG propulsion and environmental innovation, as reported by Alphaliner on LinkedIn.

Enhanced ‘Jacques Saadé’ Class Design

The CMA CGM SEINE and its three upcoming sister ships are an improved evolution of the nine LNG-fueled vessels previously delivered to CMA CGM between 2020 and 2021. The lead ship of that initial series, the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, gave the class its name. Following the original naming convention, which honors iconic places in Paris, the new vessels will continue this thematic tradition.

Strategic Deployment and LNG Fleet Expansion

These four enhanced Megamax vessels were ordered in October 2022 and will operate alongside the existing nine ships on a fixed Asia-Europe rotation that spans 13 weeks. With the arrival of CMA CGM SEINE, the company now boasts a total of 70 LNG-fueled vessels in its fleet—more than any other carrier in the world. This also accounts for around 42% of all LNG-powered container ships currently in global operation.

CMA CGM’s continued investment in LNG propulsion underscores its broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and lead the transition toward greener maritime transport solutions.
