TSUNEISHI Launches Its First Methanol-Fuelled 5,900 TEU Container Carrier In China

13

TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd. has announced a significant development in sustainable maritime transport with the successful completion of the first block loading of its 5,900 TEU-type methanol-fuelled container carrier on April 16, 2025. The vessel is being constructed at TSUNEISHI GROUP (ZHOUSHAN) SHIPBUILDING INC. (TZS), the group’s shipbuilding base in China.

TSUNEISHI’s Largest Container Vessel to Date

The 5,900 TEU container ship is the largest ever built by the TSUNEISHI Group. It can carry up to 5,915 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), including up to 1,400 reefer containers, meeting the growing demand for refrigerated transport.

The vessel features:

  • An enhanced hull form for better hydrodynamics.

  • The MT-FAST energy-saving system, improving propulsion efficiency by ~4%.

  • A large-capacity shaft generator for improved fuel efficiency.

  • Dual-fuel capability, supporting both methanol and traditional fuels.

Toward a Carbon-Neutral Future

This newbuild has been engineered as part of TSUNEISHI’s vision for zero CO₂ emissions using green methanol—a carbon-neutral fuel derived from renewable hydrogen and recovered CO₂ or biomass.

Key sustainability features include:

  • Methanol-capable main engine and HiMSEN generators (8H32DF-LM by HD Hyundai).

  • Onboard infrastructure to receive high-capacity alternative maritime power (AMP).

  • The ability to shut down generators during anchorage to achieve zero emissions in port.

Advancing Innovation in Eco-Friendly Shipping

TSUNEISHI’s latest vessel underscores its commitment to reducing maritime carbon emissions while delivering optimal loading performance and operational efficiency. With integrated technologies like MT-FAST and AMP systems, the vessel supports both commercial demand and environmental goals.

As TSUNEISHI continues to promote methanol-fuelled ship development, it strengthens its role as a global leader in green shipbuilding innovation, aligning with international targets for maritime decarbonization.
