Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. (Osaka Gas) has initiated its shore-to-ship LNG bunkering service, marking a significant step as the first gas utility in Japan to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel directly to vessels at its terminal. This new service is specifically designed to substantially decrease carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions within the maritime sector.

Shore To Ship Bunkering

Today marked the commencement of a new shore-to-ship LNG bunkering service at Osaka Gas’ Senboku LNG Terminal, located in Takaishi City, Osaka Prefecture. The inaugural delivery of LNG fuel was made to the VERDE HERALDO, an LNG-fueled vessel operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL). This vessel plays a crucial role in transporting raw materials essential for steel production for JFE Steel Corporation.

The launch of this shore-to-ship service significantly enhances Osaka Gas’ LNG fuel delivery capabilities, supplementing its existing truck-to-ship LNG bunkering service, which has been operational since 2019. This expansion addresses the current limited availability of facilities in Japan capable of supplying LNG to vessels. Osaka Gas has further plans to introduce a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering service utilizing a dedicated LNG bunkering vessel, with operations scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2026.

These diverse supply methods are intended to provide a stable and flexible LNG fuel supply to the growing number of LNG-fueled vessels, driven by global decarbonization trends and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ambitious target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Through its expanding LNG bunkering services, Osaka Gas is strategically positioned to contribute to the sustainability of the maritime industry.

Looking beyond LNG, Osaka Gas is also actively exploring the potential of utilizing e-methane as a future marine fuel, aiming for a further reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative aligns with the Daigas Group’s Energy Transition 2050 plan, announced in February 2025, underscoring the Group’s commitment to fostering a low-carbon and ultimately decarbonized maritime industry.
