Shanghai SIPG Commissions Advanced LNG Bunkering Vessel From Jiangnan Shipbuilding

12

Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), through its subsidiary SIPG Energy, has taken a major step forward in its green energy strategy by awarding Jiangnan Shipbuilding a contract for the construction of a cutting-edge LNG bunkering vessel. Scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2027, the vessel is designed to bolster SIPG’s capacity for clean fuel logistics across China’s maritime network.

LNG Bunkering with Future-Ready Capabilities

The vessel will be equipped with three IMO Type C LNG cargo tanks, boasting a total capacity of 20,000 cubic metres. It will be purpose-built for ship-to-ship LNG bunkering as well as supplying LNG to onshore terminals. The design includes an IMO Tier III-compliant propulsion system to ensure lower emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2), reinforcing SIPG’s commitment to sustainable port operations.

Eco-Friendly and Intelligent Design

Among its most notable features are an electrically driven azimuthing main thruster and a bow thruster, which ensure enhanced maneuverability. An intelligent ship management system will also be integrated to optimize performance and operational efficiency. The onboard equipment will allow the capture and reuse of boil-off gas (BOG), converting it into energy for onboard systems—eliminating unnecessary environmental emissions.

Expanded LNG Support Services

Beyond its bunkering functions, the vessel will offer support services for other LNG-fueled ships, including inerting, cold cabin preparation, and gas testing. These added capabilities position the vessel as a versatile asset for China’s growing LNG maritime infrastructure.

With this initiative, SIPG is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable port operations and supporting the broader decarbonization of the shipping industry in line with international environmental standards.
