Launching in July 2025, the NextWave Seafarers programme offers valuable sea-time training for cadets from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and supported by Saudi Arabia and its national shipping company, Bahri, the programme aims to build maritime careers while addressing the global shortage of trained seafarers.
Training Opportunities for Future Seafarers
The programme provides practical, real-life seagoing experience on Bahri-operated commercial vessels. Cadets enrolled in recognized maritime academies will complete up to six months of structured onboard training. This sea-time is essential for qualifying as deck officers, engine officers, or electro-technical officers. The initiative addresses the global shortage of skilled seafarers and supports young professionals from regions where access to such opportunities is limited.
Fully Sponsored Programme Benefits
All expenses for participating cadets are covered by the programme, making it accessible regardless of financial background. Benefits include placement on Bahri ships, a monthly stipend, round-trip airfare, visa support, and daily subsistence allowances for travel days. This financial support allows cadets to focus entirely on their training and career growth without worrying about costs.
Eligibility and Nomination Process
The programme is open only to cadets nominated through their national maritime administrations. Each eligible country may nominate up to two cadets—preferably one male and one female to encourage gender balance. Nominees must meet the set eligibility criteria and submit a completed nomination form with supporting documents. Direct applications from individuals are not accepted, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process coordinated by national authorities.
