Vessel Capesized

Reports indicate that a ship carrying a large number of sheep, estimated to be in the thousands (with some unconfirmed reports suggesting a much higher number), capsized in the Red Sea near the coast of Ras Al-Arah in Yemen’s Lahj Governorate. The vessel was reportedly en route from Somalia to Djibouti when the incident occurred.

Following the capsizing, local Yemeni fishermen from Ras Al-Arah swiftly mobilized their boats to carry out a rescue operation. Their efforts resulted in saving several crew members, believed to be Somali nationals, along with a significant number of the sheep on board.

Tragically, despite the rapid response of the fishermen, local reports indicate that more than 160 sheep drowned in the incident. Videos from the scene depicted frantic efforts by Yemenis to pull surviving animals from the waters of the Red Sea. The vessel ran aground before completely sinking, leading to chaotic scenes as fishermen and local residents worked to save the remaining livestock.
