Officials are actively responding to an active oil and natural gas leak off the Louisiana coast, initially reported on April 26, 2025, around 4 p.m., reports Safety4Sea.
Expanded Response Operations
More than 150 responders are involved in containment and recovery operations. The response has amplified tremendously, with specialised gear sent to the scene, such as:
- 6 MARCO skimmers
- 4 drum skimmers
- Several recovery storage units
- More than 7,800 feet of 18-inch containment boom, with more boom on the way
Island Protection Measures
Responders have installed hundreds of absorbent boom bales to guard nearby islands. Oil Spill Removal Organisations have collected about 9,492 gallons of oily liquids to date.
Aerial Monitoring and Air Quality
Continual aerial helicopter and drone surveys are being undertaken. A low-altitude flight restriction of two miles is presently in place surrounding the site of the incident. Air quality monitoring has not indicated any immediate risk to public health.
Well Control and Discharge Efforts
The size and rate of discharge continue to be unknown. A well control contractor is present in an attempt to shut down the release. Efforts continue to prevent environmental harm and ensure public safety.
Wildlife Status and Public Reporting
There have been no credible reports of affected wildlife. Authorities are requesting that mariners and the public help facilitate surveillance efforts:
