Klaipėda Port has recorded tremendous growth in the first quarter of 2025, with close to 10 million tonnes of cargo handled, representing a 15% growth from the previous corresponding period, reports The Baltic Times.
Cargo Handling Performance and Growth Drivers
Handling a total of 9.75 million tonnes of freight, the port is up by almost 1.3 million tonnes. The development was mostly facilitated by historic performance for container and LNG freight handling. The results further reinforce Klaipėda’s leading role among Baltic ports with its market share growing to almost 41%.
Container and LNG Cargo Drive the Growth
Its largest contribution to this increase came from the container cargo handling, which grew by 33%, or 723 thousand tonnes, to achieve the best ever quarterly result for the Port of Klaipėda in this category. Also, LNG cargo handling was 100 thousand tonnes, up by 18% from last year.
Other Important Cargo Growth
Other growth areas of importance were:
- Construction materials and minerals: +62% or 228 thousand tonnes
- Bulk fertilisers: +92% or 162 thousand tonnes
- Ro/Ro cargo: +7% or 109 thousand tonnes
- Oil products: +7% or 66 thousand tonnes
Declines in Some Cargo Segments
Despite the overall growth, there were falls in handling some types of cargo:
- Agricultural products: -19% or 275 thousand tonnes
- Timber and forestry products: -10% or 21 thousand tonnes
- Liquid fertilisers: -81% or 92 thousand tonnes
Methods of Transport of Cargo
The bulk of the cargo (62%) during the first quarter of 2025 arrived by road, 28% coming by train. The remaining cargo was supplied via sea and pipeline (LNG).
During the first quarter of 2025, the vessel repair firms at the Port of Klaipėda conducted repair work for 12 ships.
Market Growth of Share in Baltic Ports
The combined cargo of Baltic ports increased by 4%, to 23.8 million tonnes, during the first quarter. The market share of Klaipėda among Baltic ports has increased by 4 percentage points to almost 41%, that of the Port of Riga fell by almost 2 percentage points to 18.3%, and that of the Port of Tallinn decreased by 0.6 percentage points to 14%.

“The results of the first quarter confirm that Klaipėda Port is moving in the right direction. Growth is not a coincidence — it is the outcome of consistent work, strategic decisions, and the ability to adapt in a changing environment,” said Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority
