New Financing Guide Launched To Boost Wind-Powered Shipping Projects

14

To support the growing movement toward wind-powered maritime transport, a new publication titled “Practical Guide to Financing Wind-Powered Vessel Projects” was officially released on April 29, 2025. Developed by the Association Wind Ship in collaboration with Crédit Industriel et Commercial (CIC) and Crédit Maritime – Banque Populaire Grand Ouest (BPGO), the guide aims to assist shipowners in navigating the financial complexities of wind propulsion projects.

Empowering Shipowners Through Financial Insight

The guide offers a step-by-step overview of the financing process for wind-powered ships, helping project owners prepare strong financing applications and understand bank expectations. While it solely focuses on financial planning, users are encouraged to develop technical components of their projects alongside financial preparation.

Windcoop’s Milestone Order: A First for Wind-Powered Container Shipping

The launch of the guide comes on the heels of a major industry development: French activist shipping company Windcoop has placed an order for the world’s first wind-powered container vessel at RMK Marine in Türkiye. Scheduled for delivery in May 2027, the vessel will serve the Madagascar–France trade lane.

The Wind Pact: A National Push Toward Decarbonisation

The release of the financing guide builds on momentum from the Wind Pact, signed a year earlier by the French government, along with maritime, logistics, and financial stakeholders. The pact underscores a shared commitment to decarbonize shipping through wind propulsion technologies.

A Collaborative Future for Wind Shipping

The guide is part of a larger collaborative effort facilitated by Association Wind Ship, offering a workspace for stakeholders to develop solutions collectively and push wind propulsion from concept to commercial viability.
