Kongsberg Maritime To Equip Matson’s New LNG-Powered Megaships

20

Kongsberg Maritime is set to deliver advanced integrated technologies for three 3,600 TEU LNG-powered container vessels being built at Philly Shipyard for Matson Navigation Company. These Aloha Class ships, the largest Jones Act-compliant containerships ever built in the U.S., symbolize a leap forward in sustainable shipping and high-speed cargo delivery.

Record-Breaking U.S. Shipbuilding for Matson’s Fleet

At 260 meters long, the new vessels are the largest U.S.-built container ships under the Jones Act. Purpose-built for Matson’s China-Long Beach Express (CLX) service, the ships are designed for high-speed operation (23+ knots) to ensure Matson’s signature fast deliveries between Asia and the U.S. West Coast.

LNG Power Paired with Hybrid Electrical Systems

The ships will run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), significantly cutting emissions compared to conventional fuels. Kongsberg Maritime will enhance this further with the installation of hybrid electrical systems, managed by its proprietary Energy Management System. This technology is aimed at optimizing energy use while reducing the vessels’ carbon footprint.

A Milestone in U.S. Maritime Decarbonization

With the integration of LNG propulsion and smart hybrid tech, these vessels mark a significant step in Matson’s decarbonization journey. Kongsberg’s contribution showcases how advanced marine systems can align speed, efficiency, and environmental responsibility in modern shipping operations.
