Yang Ming Honored With Sapphire Award For Championing Marine Conservation

22

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has once again proven its environmental leadership by earning the prestigious Sapphire Award—NOAA’s highest honor—for the fourth time. This recognition comes as a result of the company’s continued commitment to the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies Program, where it voluntarily reduces vessel speeds to safeguard marine life and cut emissions along the California coast.

Protecting Marine Giants through Voluntary Speed Reductions

Since 2016, Yang Ming has played an active role in slowing its vessels to 10 knots or less in ecologically sensitive areas such as Monterey Bay, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Southern California. This practice significantly reduces the risk of ship strikes on endangered whales, including blue, fin, and humpback species, and lessens underwater noise pollution.

Environmental and Climate Benefits from Slow Steaming

By operating at reduced speeds, Yang Ming not only protects marine biodiversity but also curbs harmful air pollutants like nitrogen and sulfur oxides. These efforts contribute to healthier coastal communities and help mitigate the shipping industry’s impact on global climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainability at the Core of Yang Ming’s Vision

Yang Ming aligns its marine conservation efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. Through education, volunteer programs, and responsible operations, the company empowers its workforce and stakeholders to build a culture of sustainability focused on ocean preservation and ecological balance.
