Oman’s state-owned shipping giant Asyad Shipping has acquired two sister very large crude carriers (VLCCs) for US$205 million, marking the first major VLCC transaction in nearly a year and setting a new benchmark in vessel pricing.

Acquisition and Vessel Capabilities

The ships, Landbridge Wisdom and Landbridge Glor, were delivered in 2019 and 2020 by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

The acquired vessels are high-capacity VLCCs designed for efficient long-haul operations. Measuring 332.95 meters in length, 60 meters in width, and with a deadweight of 308,000 tons, each ship can carry up to 2 million barrels of crude oil. Their operational range exceeds 25,000 nautical miles, enabling seamless navigation across major global oil routes including the Strait of Malacca.

Fleet Expansion and Strategic Positioning

Asyad Shipping is significantly expanding its fleet as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its global presence. Following a successful US$333 million IPO in 2025, the company is investing US$2.7 billion to add 33 new vessels, including tankers, gas carriers, and cargo ships, by 2025.

With over 90 vessels currently in operation, Asyad, owned by Oman’s sovereign wealth fund, is positioning itself as a key player in global maritime trade, focusing on key markets in Europe, Japan, and South Korea. This growth underscores Oman’s commitment to becoming a maritime powerhouse and enhancing its role in international energy transportation.
