Concerning Maritime Security Overview: Dryad Global Reports Rising Risks and Tensions

25

This week’s maritime security overview paints a concerning picture with several key areas experiencing heightened risks and tensions, reports Dryad Global.

Persisting Piracy

Maritime crime remains a significant problem in Mexico’s Bay of Campeche, an area rich in oil resources, with offshore platforms and their support vessels facing a growing number of threats.

On May 2nd, an offshore supply vessel successfully defended itself against a pirate boarding attempt that occurred 26 nautical miles west of Paraíso. Just a few days prior, an attack on a platform, located near Dos Bocas, was prevented by the platform’s crew, who used firefighting equipment. However, the Mexican Navy arrived after the incident had already been resolved.

Alarmingly, PEMEX has already reported 178 attacks this year. They are reportedly exploiting weaknesses in the naval response capabilities and alleged collaboration from insiders.

Several key factors contribute to this ongoing issue:

  • Underreported incidents: The true extent of piracy in the region is likely masked by incidents that go unreported.
  • Constraints on naval operation: Mexico’s naval operation, codenamed Refuerzo, is facing logistical and funding limitations, potentially hindering its effectiveness.
  • Socioeconomic pressures: Socioeconomic difficulties in coastal states such as Campeche and Tabasco are believed to be driving recruitment into piracy.

Incident Highlights

Recent maritime security incidents and developments around the globe:

  • Red Sea: Somali pirate groups are seemingly taking advantage of the current regional instability to re-establish their presence in the area.
  • San Juan Port, Puerto Rico: Authorities at San Juan Port have increased the intensity of container inspections as part of a broader security enhancement operation.
  • Amazon Region, Peru: A devastating collision has occurred in the Amazon region of Peru between a naval vessel and an oil platform, tragically resulting in at least two fatalities.
  • Ras Isa Port, Yemen: Reports are indicating that Houthi forces are detaining and issuing threats to vessels operating in the vicinity of Ras Isa Port in Yemen.
  • Bandar Abbas, Iran: Ongoing disruptions are negatively impacting port operations at Bandar Abbas, a situation exacerbated by wider geopolitical tensions in the region.
  • Syria: Despite the high-risk environment, CMA CGM has announced a planned investment of $260 million in the Tartus port in Syria, signaling a growing commercial interest in the area.
