Samsung Heavy Industries Expands FLNG Portfolio with Deep-Sea Model

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has announced an expansion of its product offerings with the development of the MLF-O, which stands for Modularized LNG Floater – Optimized. This new design is a standardized model for a deep-sea Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility, capable of production, storage, and offloading of LNG, reports Business Korea.

Certification Received

Samsung Heavy Industries announced on May 7th that it has received basic certification for its MLF-O (likely standing for Modularized LNG Floater – Offshore) from three major international classification societies: Norwegian (DNV), British (LR – Lloyd’s Register), and American (ABS – American Bureau of Shipping). This certification was obtained at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC 2025) held in Houston, USA, on May 5th (local time).

The MLF-O represents Samsung Heavy Industries’ second standard model for floating LNG (FLNG) production facilities, building upon its earlier “MLF-N,” which was designed for coastal applications.

A key challenge in storing LNG in its liquid state on floating vessels is the “sloshing” phenomenon, which is similar to waves inside the storage tanks. The MLF-O is specifically engineered to minimize the internal impact caused by sloshing by arranging the cargo holds in two rows. With this certification, Samsung Heavy Industries has now completed its portfolio of standardized FLNG models optimized for both near-shore and deep-sea operating environments.

Samsung Heavy Industries highlighted that the MLF standard model for FLNG offers significant advantages over traditional onshore LNG plants, including faster delivery times and improved economic efficiency. The company further explained that “MLF has the flexibility to easily increase cargo hold capacity from the basic 180,000 cubic meters (m³) to a maximum of 220,000 m³ by standardizing the LNG cargo hold and hull.”
