NYK Becomes First Japanese Firm To Purchase Climeworks’ CDR Credit Portfolio For Net-Zero Goals

24

In a strategic move toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions, NYK has entered a three-year agreement with Swiss climate tech company Climeworks to purchase a portfolio of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits starting in fiscal year 2026. This marks the first time a Japanese company has acquired such credits in a bundled format, reinforcing NYK’s commitment to deep decarbonization across its operations.

Pioneering Use of CDR Credits to Offset Residual Emissions

While NYK continues its efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency and the adoption of alternative fuels like LNG, ammonia, and methanol, it recognizes that certain residual emissions are unavoidable in the maritime industry. To compensate for these, the company will utilize CDR credits provided by Climeworks, helping it move closer to its long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Diversified Carbon Removal Technologies in the Portfolio

The CDR credits NYK is purchasing are generated using a variety of advanced and nature-based technologies. These include biochar, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), and enhanced rock weathering — all designed to permanently remove and store CO2 from the atmosphere. By integrating these diverse approaches, Climeworks offers a reliable and scalable solution for companies like NYK seeking measurable carbon removal.

Future Commitment and Industry Leadership

This initiative aligns with NYK’s corporate position paper on CDR credits, which outlines its strategy for balancing unavoidable emissions with credible offsets. The company plans to continue working closely with customers and technology providers to expand its use of carbon credits and drive broader adoption of climate-positive solutions in the shipping sector. Through this partnership, NYK not only strengthens its decarbonization roadmap but also sets an example for others in the maritime industry to follow.
