At the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Fincantieri, newcleo, and Pininfarina revealed a pioneering vision for the future of sustainable nuclear energy. The project marks a bold convergence of advanced nuclear technology, industrial application, and aesthetic design aimed at tackling climate change and decarbonization through next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs).
A Showcase of Innovation
The centerpiece of the installation is a full-scale model of newcleo’s TL-40 lead-cooled reactor — a compact, inherently safe, and waste-recycling nuclear power unit intended for maritime propulsion and isolated power generation. Housed in Venice’s historic Corderie dell’Arsenale, the display invites visitors on an immersive journey into the workings and design of this breakthrough reactor.
Redefining Nuclear Energy Through Design
Designed by Pininfarina, the reactor features a striking open configuration and vase-like silhouette with a Moiré-patterned shell that plays with light and shadow. The accessible layout and direct visibility into the reactor’s inner mechanics allow visitors to engage with the science of nuclear energy in a transparent, educational setting. The structure combines aesthetics with symbolism to reshape public perception of nuclear power.
Decarbonization and Safety at the Core
The TL-40 reactor embodies fourth-generation nuclear principles, including passive safety, compact form, and the ability to consume traditional nuclear waste. This technology offers a game-changing pathway for producing clean, continuous energy while eliminating the long-term waste burden—an ideal solution for high-demand, decarbonized applications such as maritime transport.
Industrial and Technological Collaboration
Fincantieri brings its expertise in complex naval engineering to study the application of newcleo’s reactors in maritime propulsion, reinforcing the potential for clean nuclear power in the shipping industry. Pininfarina, beyond shaping the reactor’s visual identity, is also co-designing a nuclear fuel R&D center with newcleo in France. These partnerships represent a cohesive blend of form, function, and environmental responsibility.
A New Narrative for Nuclear Power
By presenting this innovative project at the prestigious Venice Biennale, the three companies aim to challenge outdated perceptions of nuclear energy. Their collaborative message is clear: with the right blend of design, engineering, and forward-thinking policy, nuclear power can become an integral part of the global transition to net-zero emissions.
