In a bold move toward sustainable maritime innovation, Asyad Group has unveiled Sohar Max, a massive cargo ship that utilizes cutting-edge wind propulsion technologies. Asyad’s strategic investment in this environmentally focused innovation reflects its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency in line with global sustainability goals and Oman Vision 2040.
Engineering a Green Giant
With a carrying capacity of 400,000 tons, Sohar Max represents a technological leap in maritime shipping. The vessel is equipped with five rotor sails, each standing 35 meters tall and measuring 5 meters in diameter, developed in collaboration with Vale and Anemoi Marine Technologies. These sails utilize the Magnus effect to harness wind energy, providing additional propulsion and reducing the vessel’s fuel consumption by up to 6%. The result is a significant reduction of approximately 3,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year, positioning Sohar Max as a benchmark in eco-friendly shipping.
Foldable Rotor Sails for Operational Excellence
A standout feature of Sohar Max is its foldable rotor sails. Engineered by Anemoi, the sails can be horizontally folded during port entry or when passing under bridges, offering enhanced operational flexibility.
