Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) officially launched OceanCare, a comprehensive global wellbeing program for seafarers serving on its vessels. Developed in collaboration with maritime charity The Mission to Seafarers (MtS), the initiative focuses on offering confidential, accessible mental health and welfare support to MOL seafarers and their families around the world.
A Tailored Approach to Seafarer Mental Health
Seafarers face distinct mental and emotional challenges due to prolonged time at sea, isolation, and demanding work conditions. OceanCare addresses these concerns by establishing a completely independent and confidential support system. It allows both seafarers and their families to voluntarily seek assistance for wellbeing issues without fear of stigma or breach of privacy. Core offerings include one-on-one counselling, crisis support, and dedicated assistance for women seafarers.
Pioneering the Role of Welfare Officers at Sea
A key feature of OceanCare is the appointment of a dedicated Welfare Officer. This new role ensures that MOL seafarers and their families have direct access to someone they can trust for support, guidance, and care coordination. The Welfare Officer will serve as a vital bridge between seafarers and available resources, providing a consistent, compassionate point of contact to address emotional and psychological needs during their time at sea and ashore.
Aligning with MOL’s Long-Term Sustainability Vision
OceanCare is a strategic part of the MOL Group’s broader Sustainability Strategy, particularly under its “Safety & Value” and “Human & Community” pillars. These pillars emphasize the creation of a secure, inclusive, and human-centered work environment. With this initiative, MOL is reinforcing its commitment to mental health care, promoting dignity in maritime work, and fostering a workplace culture where psychological safety is prioritized alongside physical safety.
