India and Pakistan Reach Temporary Ceasefire After Near 100 Hours of Escalation

After nearly 100 hours of escalating tensions that began on May 7th, 2025, India and Pakistan have agreed to a temporary ceasefire. This recent period of conflict is significantly shorter than the 14-day war fought between the two nations in 1971, which remains one of the briefest wars in global history, reports Zee News.

Temporary Ceasefire

Following nearly 100 hours of heightened tensions that began on May 7th after the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, India and Pakistan reached a temporary ceasefire agreement today, Saturday, May 10th. India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, stated that India agreed to Pakistan’s request for a ceasefire, effective from 5 pm Indian Standard Time (IST). Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also announced that an understanding had been reached between the two nations to halt firing and military action. Notably, US Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Marco Rubio played significant roles in mediating this ceasefire.

While the ceasefire is temporary, it has de-escalated a situation that had brought both countries perilously close to an official war. The preceding aggression was characterized by escalation and retaliatory actions.

This near-100-hour period of heightened tension occurred between two nations with a long and complex history of conflict since their independence in 1947.
