Danish shipping operator Norden has completed its inaugural biofuel journey out of the United States, in collaboration with independent renewable energy producer Albioma. The journey is an important milestone in Norden’s strategic development of increased use of biofuels in support of its goals to reduce customers’ supply chain emissions, reports Clean Shipping International.

Biofuel Blend Used on Voyage

The trip took advantage of an ISCC EU-accredited B24 biofuel mix, comprised of 24% biofuel and 76% VLSFO (Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil) traditional marine fuel. The fuel was bunkered at Port of Houston, Texas, before Norden’s ship carrying 30,000 tonnes of wood pellets loaded in Mobile, Alabama. The cargo subsequently sailed to Réunion, a French overseas department situated in the Indian Ocean, where it was unloaded for Albioma.

Expansion of Biofuel Supply Chain Capabilities

It has been difficult to source high-quality biofuels that are compliant with Norden’s high standards due to a lack of availability at specific locations. However, through the addition of a new biofuel supplier, Norden can now provide biofuel customers selling from the US. This partnership fits into Norden’s objective to lower customers’ supply chain emissions.

Mikkel Marconi, Commercial Lead Biofuel, Norden, said: “Until now, we have not been able to source biofuel in the US, living up to Norden’s high standards. With a new bunker collaboration, we are now able to further accelerate our ambition to lower our customers’ supply chain emissions in the here and now in a new region. Thanks to Albioma for entrusting us with the responsibility to lower their emissions.”

Norden’s Long-Term Commitment to Biofuels

Norden has been a pioneer in the application of biofuels to lower supply chain emissions, having made the world’s first-ever commercial 100% biofuel voyage in 2018. The company has since made substantial investments in biofuels in response to rising customer demand and decarbonisation legislation.

Henrik Røjel, Head of Decarbonisation and Climate Solutions, Norden, said:
“We are pleased to perform yet another biofuel voyage for a customer looking to decarbonise their supply chains. During recent years, we have seen an increasing demand from customers to use biofuel, validating our many years of work and strategic investments in biofuel as a way to instantly reduce emissions in the here and now.”

Strategic Investments in Biofuels and Decarbonisation

During 2023, Norden made a minority investment in the scale-up of biofuels, Mash Makes, thereby bolstering its future supplies of renewable fuel. In addition, last year, the firm initiated a Book & Claim offering that allows it to assign its reduction in emissions on biofuel voyages to its customers throughout the maritime value chain, even where biofuels cannot physically be on specific trade routes or voyages.
