Piraeus Container Terminal To Offer Biofuel Bunkering Services

16

Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT), a key overseas asset of Cosco Shipping Ports, will now provide biofuel bunkering services in response to increasing demand for greener alternatives among shipping clients. The move aligns with recent regulatory changes and global decarbonisation efforts.

Aligning with Updated Biofuel Standards and Regulations

The Greek government’s adoption of Joint Ministerial Decision 115/2024, which allows marine fuels to contain up to 100% fatty acid methyl ester under ISO 8217:2024, opens the door for expanded use of biofuels. PCT has engaged legal counsel to reassess the legal landscape for bunkering operations and is coordinating with suppliers to broaden client offerings.

Supporting Industry Decarbonisation Amidst Market Shifts

The initiative coincides with the introduction of FuelEU Maritime regulations and the IMO’s new carbon pricing framework. As one of Europe’s top container ports, Piraeus’ pivot to biofuel is a significant step toward sustainability, despite an 8% drop in volume in 2023 due to Red Sea-related disruptions.
