JR Shipping Group Reinforces Commitment To Green Shipping With New ECO-8500 Vessels

15

JR Shipping Group is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable maritime transport through the acquisition of two advanced ECO-8500 dry cargo vessels. Developed in partnership with Boomsma Shipping and Leonhardt & Blumberg, and built by Chowgule Shipbuilding in India, these vessels are designed to significantly lower fuel consumption and emissions—pushing the short sea shipping sector towards a greener future.

Cutting-Edge Vessel Design with High Efficiency

The new ships, scheduled for delivery in June 2027 and February 2028, are part of a series of eight vessels designed by Conoship International. With a deadweight of 8,500 tons and a 13,900 cubic meter single hold, the vessels will feature open-top construction and a complete tween deck. Their diesel-electric propulsion system, powered by four Tier III Volvo generators with SCR technology, is optimized for energy efficiency and adaptable to future fuels.

Pioneering Emission Reduction Technologies

JR Shipping’s ECO-8500 vessels are engineered to use 50%–60% less propulsion energy compared to conventional tonnage. Emission reductions of 50%–90% are expected, thanks to design elements that support carbon capture, wind-assisted propulsion, and potential battery-powered, emission-free operation. These innovations align with global efforts to decarbonize maritime logistics and reflect JR Shipping’s proactive environmental strategy.

Strategic Return to the Dry Cargo Market

After exiting the dry cargo segment in 2019, JR Shipping is re-entering with a renewed focus on quality and sustainability. With years of industry experience and a proven track record in short sea shipping, the group is well-positioned to serve evolving market demands. This strategic expansion marks a step forward in the company’s vision to become a versatile and future-ready shipping provider.
