Danish Shipping has expressed strong support for the European Union’s newly adopted regulation aimed at improving the safe transport of plastic pellets by sea. This regulation introduces binding rules focused on prevention, containment, and effective cleanup of spills, aligning with recommendations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Nina Porst, Director of Climate, Environment, and Security at Danish Shipping, stated, “The rules have a strong focus on prevention, containment, and effective clean-up of spills. This is exactly what we have been asking for. I’m pleased that the rules strengthen environmental safeguards while avoiding excessive administrative burdens on the maritime sector and ensuring fair competition between EU and non-EU carriers. This is a balanced and pragmatic approach that we can fully support.”

The regulation mandates that plastic pellets be packaged in high-quality, sealed containers with clear labeling and safety data sheets. Strict stowage instructions must be followed, and in the event of a spill, immediate notification to emergency services and mitigation actions are required. These measures are set to enter into force 20 days after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, with maritime transport provisions becoming applicable 36 months thereafter.

Danish Shipping particularly welcomes the regulation’s adaptability to future developments, noting that should the IMO adopt additional global measures to address marine pollution from plastic pellet spills, the EU framework is designed to evolve accordingly. This regulation represents a significant step toward cleaner seas and demonstrates the EU’s commitment to environmental leadership in maritime transport.
