Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), which represents a weighted average of spot container freight rates across the region, experienced a 7% decrease in the two-week period leading up to May 15th, 2025. The index value settled at $656 per 40ft container. This indicates a softening of spot rates within the Intra-Asian container shipping market during this fortnight, reports Drewry.

Decline and Growth

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), which represents a weighted average of spot rates across 18 major trade routes within Asia, experienced a 7% drop in early May, settling at $656 per 40ft container. This decline follows two consecutive two-week periods of growth.

Despite this recent decrease, the IACI is currently 11% higher than it was in May 2024. According to Drewry’s analysis, intra-Asia freight rates are anticipated to continue their decline but are expected to remain within a stable range for the remainder of the current month.

The Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) tracks actual spot container freight rates for key shipping routes within Asia. This fortnightly updated index comprises 18 specific route indices, each representing an individual shipping lane, as well as the composite IACI. All index values are reported in US dollars per 40ft container.
