Greece’s DESFA Upgrades Revithoussa LNG Terminal with New BOG Compressor

Greece’s gas grid operator DESFA has upgraded its liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to enhance its sustainability. The Revithoussa LNG terminal resumed operations on May 12th, 2025, following a planned shutdown that began in April. This shutdown was crucial for the integration of a new high-pressure boil-off gas (BOG) compressor station, reports Offshore Energy.

Minimizing Losses

Following a planned shutdown that commenced on April 22, 2025, the Revithoussa LNG terminal resumed operations on May 12, 2025, according to a social media announcement by the Greek operator, DESFA. The shutdown was necessary for the integration of a new high-pressure boil-off gas (BOG) compressor station.

This new compressor station, anticipated to become operational soon, is designed to sustainably manage boil-off gases by minimizing product losses. It will capture LNG vapors from the terminal’s storage tanks and inject them into the high-pressure network. DESFA states that this upgrade is expected to eliminate flaring during normal operations, positioning Revithoussa as a “zero CO2 emissions” terminal.

In addition to the compressor station installation, the terminal underwent scheduled maintenance works and inspections aimed at extending its operational lifecycle. Concurrently, tie-in works for the implementation of a small-scale LNG jetty were completed. This new jetty is projected to enhance the terminal’s capabilities by enabling the supply of LNG to new areas within the country and further developing its bunkering business.

The Revithoussa LNG terminal, situated on the islet of Revithoussa, approximately 45 kilometers west of Athens, has a storage capacity of 225,000 cubic meters (cbm) of LNG and a regasification capacity of 1,400 cbm per hour.
