Galveston Gets First LNG Bunkering Permit on U.S. Gulf Coast

The Galveston LNG Bunker Port (GLBP), a joint venture between Houston-based Pilot LNG and Seapath, a subsidiary of the Libra Group, has secured final permits to construct the first dedicated liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering facility on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Located on the Texas City Ship Channel, the $300 million project aims to supply clean-burning LNG to the growing fleet of LNG-powered vessels in the Houston-Galveston region, reports Reuters.

Project Overview

The GLBP facility is designed to produce up to 720,000 gallons of LNG per day upon full operation. The first phase of production, targeting 360,000 gallons per day, is expected to commence within two years, with the second phase doubling capacity within the following year. The facility will serve the Port Houston complex, the largest port for waterborne tonnage in the U.S., and support the broader maritime industry’s transition to cleaner fuels.

Strategic Importance

The GLBP project aligns with global efforts to reduce shipping emissions and the U.S. strategy to increase LNG use and exports. By providing a domestic source of LNG for marine fuel, the facility aims to reduce dependency on foreign energy sources and support the decarbonization of the maritime sector.

With the support of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard, the GLBP project is on track to begin construction later this year. Initial bunker deliveries are scheduled for the second half of 2027, marking a significant milestone in the development of clean fuel infrastructure for the maritime industry.

The Galveston LNG Bunker Port represents a critical investment in the resilience of the United States’ maritime infrastructure and underscores the commitment to providing sustainable fuel solutions for the shipping industry.
