Karin Orsel, a prominent Dutch maritime executive, has been honored with the International Maritime Organization’s Gender Equality Award for her outstanding contributions to promoting gender balance and inclusivity in the maritime sector, reads an IMO release.

The award was presented at a ceremony in London ahead of the International Day for Women in Maritime. Orsel was recognized for her decades-long dedication to fostering equal opportunities and mentorship for women across the global shipping industry.

Starting her career at just 18, Orsel co-founded MF Shipping Group at the age of 23. Under her leadership, the company expanded significantly, growing from a modest six-vessel fleet to over 55 vessels and employing more than 1,000 seafarers and 80 office staff. Throughout her tenure as CEO, she has prioritized inclusive hiring practices, professional development, and support networks for women in maritime professions.

Her leadership has not only transformed her company but has also made a broader impact through her work with various industry organizations. Orsel currently serves as President of the European Community Shipowners’ Association and Chair of the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network. She also holds board positions in several global maritime associations and has previously led the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association.

The award also acknowledges Orsel’s forward-thinking vision, especially regarding the maritime sector’s shift toward environmental sustainability. She has highlighted the growing need for new skills as the industry moves toward decarbonization and emphasized the opportunity this presents to increase diversity in the workforce.

The IMO Gender Equality Award is given annually to individuals who have made significant efforts to advance gender equality in maritime. Karin Orsel’s recognition highlights her role as a leader, mentor, and changemaker within the global shipping community.
