Lloyd’s Register (LR) and HD Hyundai MIPO Dockyard (HMD) have entered into a strategic partnership to revolutionize the manufacturing of Type C tanks through digital innovation. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to develop a transparent, efficient, and high-quality production process for tanks used to store liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2).
Advancing Smart Manufacturing for Next-Gen Fuel Storage
The initiative is focused on creating a digitally enabled production line for Type C tanks—critical components for storing pressurized or cryogenic fuels like LNG and LCO2. As demand grows for greener fuels and carbon capture logistics, these tanks are becoming increasingly important. HMD will implement technologies such as digital twins and smart quality assurance systems, while LR will provide technical oversight and independent validation to ensure safety and consistency.
Ensuring Quality and Efficiency Through Digital Tools
The project, running from May 2025 to July 2026, will integrate digital workflows directly into HMD’s production processes. The goal is to reduce variability, cut down production time, and increase traceability—leading to more reliable and transparent quality control. This transformation supports the development of a future-ready smart factory, improving both safety and efficiency in tank manufacturing.
Building Trust with Transparent Certification and Data-Driven Assurance
Both LR and HMD emphasized the importance of transparency and verifiable quality. By embedding real-time monitoring and data-backed certification systems, shipowners can gain greater trust in the integrity of the components. LR’s Sung-Gu Park noted that the collaboration will provide a “smart, transparent quality assurance framework,” while HMD’s CEO Hyung Kwan Kim highlighted “With the advancement of digital manufacturing and automation technologies with monitoring system, consistent quality assurance and verifiable data-based quality certification has become possible. This aims to enhance the transparency of quality and establish a shipbuilding production system that shipowners can trust.”
