In a collective move to promote marine sustainability and climate action, LX Pantos has signed a five-party Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Chungcheongnam-do Province, Taean County, ChildFund Korea, and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency. This collaboration, formalized at the Gaemok Port Fishermen’s Welfare Center in Taean, centers around the Ocean Forest Project, an initiative focused on restoring underwater ecosystems by transplanting eelgrass meadows off the coast of Uihang-ri.
Reviving Marine Ecosystems with Eelgrass Plantations
Under the agreement, over 10,000 eelgrass seedlings will be transplanted annually through 2028. These underwater meadows, also known as ocean forests, play a vital role in enhancing marine biodiversity, improving fish habitats, and supporting climate resilience. Eelgrass, in particular, is known for its high carbon absorption rate, making it a valuable blue carbon resource that removes an estimated 337 tons of CO₂ per square kilometer each year.
Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration for Environmental Stewardship
Each partner in the MOU brings a unique contribution: LX Pantos leads the restoration efforts, Chungcheongnam-do Province and Taean County offer administrative support, and ChildFund Korea along with the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency provide operational expertise and ecological insights. This collaboration exemplifies how public-private partnerships can drive sustainable environmental initiatives with long-term impact.
Employee Engagement and Hands-On Conservation
Following the signing ceremony, over 30 LX Pantos employees volunteered to support the project by crafting and planting 1,000 eelgrass shoots using eco-friendly materials like clay ceramics and traditional Korean paper (hanji). Volunteers also conducted a coastal cleanup, removing marine waste and reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental action. This hands-on participation underlines LX Pantos’ dedication to corporate social responsibility and its role in preserving the oceans that are central to the logistics industry.
