CMA CGM Expands In Vietnam With Major Terminal And Green Logistics Investments

39

CMA CGM, a global leader in shipping and logistics, is significantly expanding its operations in Vietnam through a $600 million joint venture to build and operate two new container terminals and a pioneering zero-emission waterway transport system. These developments are part of CMA CGM’s long-term strategy to strengthen supply chain infrastructure in one of Asia’s fastest-growing regions.

Lach Huyen Terminals 7 & 8 to Boost Vietnam’s Trade Capacity

In partnership with Saigon Newport Corporation, CMA CGM will develop Lach Huyen Terminals 7 & 8 in Haiphong, northern Vietnam. Designed to handle up to 1.9 million TEUs, the terminals are scheduled to open in 2028. This project addresses the rising demand for container handling in northern Vietnam, a booming industrial and logistics hub that plays a critical role in global supply chains.

Strategic Investment for Long-Term Capacity

CMA CGM, present in Vietnam since 1989, sees this venture as a move to secure long-term terminal capacity in a vital trade corridor. The investment underscores the region’s growing importance for global logistics, especially with manufacturers and exporters increasingly shifting operations to Vietnam.

The group also co-owns the Gemalink terminal in Cai Mep and the Vietnam International Container Terminal in Ho Chi Minh City, strengthening its integrated logistics network across the country.

Launching Vietnam’s First Electric Barge System

In a related initiative, CMA CGM is investing in a zero-emission inland waterway transport project. This system includes a 100% battery-powered electric barge and dedicated charging infrastructure powered by a solar farm at the Gemalink terminal.

Scheduled to begin operations in 2026, the electric barge will cover a 180 km round trip between Binh Duong province and Cai Mep Port, offering a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to road freight while reducing carbon emissions in the supply chain.
