55

Maritime safety authorities in New Zealand are investigating a serious incident that occurred at the country’s southernmost commercial port, where three crew members were injured in an explosion in the engine room of a foreign-flagged cargo vessel.

Explosion During Boiler Work Under Investigation

The incident occurred on May 24 while the vessel was docked at a berth used for loading logs. According to officials, the crew members were conducting maintenance on a boiler in the engine room when a sudden explosion or flashback took place, resulting in multiple injuries. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has launched an inquiry, classifying the incident as a “serious marine casualty” under international maritime safety standards.

Emergency Response and Medical Treatment

Emergency medical services responded swiftly to the scene. Local ambulance teams treated all three injured seafarers on site. Of the victims, one was reported to be moderately injured, while two sustained serious injuries. Further updates on their condition have not yet been disclosed.

Vessel’s Background and Port Activity

The vessel involved, which operates under a foreign registry, had arrived in New Zealand after departing from Southeast Asia in late March. It had been stationed at the port since late April and was preparing to depart at the end of May. The port itself is a key gateway for exports, handling over 3.2 million tonnes of cargo annually and recording more than 130 large vessel calls in just six months leading up to the end of 2024.
