CMA CGM Joins Consortium To Advance Trade Digitalization Through Interoperable e-Bills

In a move aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of international container trade, the CMA CGM Group, a global leader in maritime, air, land, and logistics solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a consortium of partners to promote the interoperability of electronic bills of lading (eBLs).

Key Partners and Technology Platform

The collaboration brings together several leading digital trade solution providers:

  • CargoX

  • eTEU

  • ICE

  • SGTraDex

Together, the consortium will utilize TradeTrust, a blockchain-based framework developed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore, which enables trusted and secure digital documents such as eBLs.

Objectives of the Collaboration

The MoU outlines a shared commitment to:

  • Drive seamless interoperability between different eBL platforms

  • Support the legal recognition and exchange of digital documents through the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR)

  • Promote the digitalization of global trade documents for greater security, efficiency, and sustainability

Joint Working Group and Pilot Trials

A Joint Working Group will be formed, consisting of representatives from:

  • CMA CGM

  • IMDA

  • Consortium partners

The group will oversee multiple work streams and pilot trials, including:

  • Technical assessments of system integration

  • Legal feasibility studies under international electronic document laws

  • Business case evaluations to support long-term adoption
