ABS Approves KNCC’s Innovative LCO₂ Carrier Design At Nor-Shipping 2025

34

At the 60th anniversary of the Nor-Shipping maritime trade fair, ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) awarded Approval in Principle (AIP) to Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers (KNCC) for its industry-first design of a 40,000 cbm liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) carrier.

This marks a key advancement in the development of carbon transport infrastructure, vital for global decarbonization efforts.

A First-of-Its-Kind Design for Efficient Carbon Transport

The LCO₂-EP carrier concept by KNCC introduces a modular containment system that enables the transport and storage of liquefied carbon dioxide at near-ambient temperatures and elevated pressures. This approach reduces the need for extensive cooling systems and opens the door to larger, more efficient vessels. ABS conducted a thorough design review based on class and statutory requirements before issuing the AIP, validating the concept’s compliance and technical soundness.

Collaboration Driving Carbon Containment Innovation

Both ABS and KNCC emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing decarbonization technologies. Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and CTO, highlighted carbon transport as a critical part of the emissions reduction value chain. KNCC CEO Oliver Hagen-Smith acknowledged the AIP as a major step in developing scalable and safe carbon transport systems, praising the partnership with ABS as instrumental in achieving this milestone.

The AIP granted to KNCC by ABS represents a breakthrough in carbon shipping technology, aligning with the industry’s growing focus on carbon capture and storage. As regulatory pressures increase and climate goals become more urgent, innovative designs like the LCO₂-EP carrier are essential for building a reliable carbon transport infrastructure. Through such partnerships, the maritime sector continues to evolve as a key player in the global energy transition.
