Port Of Oakland Sees 6% Growth In Container Volume Amid Trade Uncertainty

24

The Port of Oakland reported continued strong performance in May 2025, with container volumes exceeding expectations despite ongoing tariff negotiations and uncertain global trade dynamics. Year-to-date (YTD) figures reveal the Port has processed 974,417 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) through the end of May—a 6% increase compared to the same period last year.

In May alone, the Port handled 187,389 TEUs, a modest increase over April’s 185,499 TEUs. This growth was driven by a notable rise in exports and steady import activity, highlighting Oakland’s resilience in the face of shifting trade conditions.

Export Growth Boosts Volume

The Port’s strength as a key export hub continues to bolster performance. Loaded exports rose to 67,327 TEUs, up 4% month-on-month and 8.7% year-over-year. Oakland remains a top U.S. gateway for agricultural and refrigerated exports, reaffirming its critical role in the national supply chain.

“Operationally, the Port continues to perform efficiently,” said Bryan Brandes, Maritime Director at the Port of Oakland. “Strong export demand and consistent operations have helped keep volumes steady even as global trade conditions remain in flux.”

Stable Imports, Reduced Empties

Loaded imports remained stable, with 79,323 TEUs processed in May—nearly unchanged from 78,965 in April, and just slightly below May 2024’s 80,035 TEUs. This reflects continued resilience in core inbound demand and steady service commitments.

Empty container traffic showed mixed trends. Empty exports dropped 19.8%, with 26,779 TEUs recorded in May 2025 versus 33,390 in May 2024. In contrast, empty imports rose 10.1%, reaching 13,960 TEUs, up from 12,681 TEUs a year earlier.

Operational Highlights

  • Vessel Calls in May: 87

  • Average TEUs per Vessel YTD: 2,220

This steady throughput continues to underscore the Port’s reliability as a West Coast logistics hub.

The Port of Oakland’s steady growth in container volumes—despite global trade uncertainties and ongoing tariff discussions—demonstrates its strength as a resilient and efficient export gateway, particularly for agricultural and refrigerated goods.

With a 6% year-to-date increase in TEU throughput and stable monthly performance, the port continues to play a vital role in supporting U.S. trade. Strong operational efficiency, rising export demand, and consistent vessel traffic signal a positive outlook for the months ahead.
