“K” LINE ENERGY SHIPPING (UK) LIMITED (KLES), a London-based arm of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE), and Yinson Production have entered into a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop and commercialize solutions for transporting and injecting liquefied CO₂. This partnership centers around the development of floating storage and injection units (FSIUs) and liquefied CO₂ carriers, targeting carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects primarily in Europe.

Importance of Offshore CO₂ Storage Solutions

Offshore sequestration is increasingly favored as a permanent and efficient CO₂ storage method, especially in regions where onshore space is limited or offshore sites are far from existing terminals. FSIUs are emerging as a viable alternative by offering flexibility and reducing the need for extended pipeline infrastructure. Notably, the Havstjerne project in Norway, partially owned by Yinson’s Stella Maris CCS unit, is considering FSIU-based CO₂ storage solutions.

Yinson’s Offshore and Carbon Capture Expertise

Yinson Production brings deep experience in offshore energy systems through its fleet of FPSO and FSO vessels. Since 2021, it has expanded its scope to include carbon capture, investing in technologies and infrastructure to build a comprehensive carbon value chain.

KLES: Leaders in CO₂ Maritime Transport

With decades of expertise in managing liquefied gas carriers, “K” LINE has recently extended its capabilities to CO₂ transport. Since 2024, KLES has operated two commercial liquefied CO₂ carriers, contributing to the world’s first CO₂ transport and storage service and reinforcing its leadership in maritime decarbonisation efforts.

Expanding a Proven Partnership

This MoU builds on the longstanding relationship between the two companies, which began in 2018 through co-ownership of FPSOs in Brazil and Ghana. The current collaboration deepens that partnership by aligning their respective competencies—Yinson’s offshore system design and “K” LINE’s shipping proficiency—to deliver comprehensive, integrated CCS solutions.

Driving Global Decarbonisation Efforts

The partnership aims to develop innovative models that enable large-scale carbon transport and offshore storage, supporting industrial emitters in reaching their climate targets. Leaders from both companies expressed a shared vision of creating adaptable infrastructure that complements traditional CCS logistics and meets the needs of diverse storage sites.

Environmental Vision and Future Outlook

Aligned with its Environmental Vision 2050, “K” LINE continues to pursue initiatives that contribute to a low-carbon society. This collaboration reflects the company’s strategy to grow its CCS business, enhance sustainability across sectors, and deliver lasting corporate and environmental value.
