21

According to provisional figures released by Container Trade Statistics (CTS) and reported by DynaLiners, worldwide container throughput in April 2025 experienced a 5.8% year-on-year increase.

Complex Shifts

Global trade patterns are currently seeing a complex shift, with overall export routes expanding while North American import traffic experienced a notable contraction.

  • Overall Trade Lanes: Volumes increased on 32 trade lanes, but fell on 17 others, indicating a mixed global picture.
  • Far East-to-North America: Exports from the Far East to North America saw a 10.4 percent slip. The reverse flow, North America-to-Far East exports, experienced an even sharper 12 percent fall.
  • Intra-North America: Trade volumes within North America (between the United States, Canada, and Mexico) significantly shrank by nearly 18 percent, highlighting considerable strain in regional trade dynamics.
  • Recent Trends: Despite a brief downturn in February, March and April of the current year (relative to 2024) have both posted solid gains, suggesting some recovery or positive momentum following the earlier dip.
