  • The Korea Shipping Association signed an MOU with the Korea Meteorological Administration to improve ocean monitoring and navigation safety.
  • The partnership will support Argo Float deployments and share weather data with vessels on key global routes.
  • Members will receive tailored weather forecasts to boost safety and operational efficiency. The collaboration aims to support sustainable shipping practices in the face of climate change.

To bolster global ocean monitoring and improve navigation safety, the Korea Shipping Association has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Meteorological Administration. This partnership aims to leverage both organizations’ capabilities and networks to secure marine weather data in the North Pacific and support the safe operations of national flag vessels, as reported by CHOSUNBIZ.

Strengthening Cooperation for Safer Navigation and Enhanced Ocean Monitoring

The Korea Shipping Association and the Korea Meteorological Administration will work together across several key areas, including joint ocean monitoring efforts, improved use of weather data for navigation safety, the sharing of global meteorological information and policies, and mutual exchange of expertise in both shipping and meteorology.

This collaboration builds on a long-standing history between the two entities, particularly through the Argo Float project led by the National Meteorological Science Institute. Since 2001, ocean observations in the Northwest Pacific and East China Sea have been conducted through this initiative, with early support from Hyundai Merchant Marine and Hanjin Shipping, which assisted in deploying Argo Floats.

Moving forward, the Korea Shipping Association will continue supporting these efforts by using member company vessels that operate on North Pacific routes to deploy additional Argo Floats. He added that the integration of accurate weather information will not only enhance operational efficiency but also contribute to developing a more sustainable shipping sector in response to global climate challenges.
