The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), encompassing the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, has reported year-to-date (YTD) cargo growth through May 2025, despite experiencing a slowdown in volumes during the month of May, reports Container News.

Year to date cargo grow

Total container volumes for May reached 266,118 TEUs, marking a 5.5% decrease compared to May 2024. Full imports were down by 7.7% and full exports declined by 4.9%. However, overall YTD volumes rose by 5.2% to 1,361,226 TEUs, underlining a strong start to the year.

The gains so far in 2025 have been attributed to several factors, including the return of vessel calls lost during last year’s labor disruptions and a recovery in regional trade flows. In particular, import volumes have seen notable growth, improving by 10.5% YTD, while exports increased by 6.2%.

Domestic volumes also saw moderate growth. Alaska volumes increased by 4.1%, while Hawaii volumes edged up by 0.4% year-to-date.

NWSA officials acknowledged the May dip but remained optimistic, highlighting the alliance’s investments in infrastructure and operational improvements aimed at supporting long-term volume gains.
