Milestone in Methanol-Powered Shipping: WinGD Completes Landmark Sea Trial

13

  • On June 10, 2025, WinGD completed the first methanol sea trial for its 10X92DF-M-1.0 dual-fuel engine, a major step in sustainable marine propulsion.
  • The trial was enabled by a pioneering single-cylinder test engine setup and demonstrated seamless integration with onboard methanol and safety systems.
  • The engine’s performance, reliability, and safety in methanol mode were fully validated, earning high praise from shipowners, classification societies, and the shipyard.

In a breakthrough for alternative fuel adoption in shipping, WinGD Ltd. successfully concluded the sea trial of its revolutionary 10X92DF-M-1.0 dual-fuel methanol engine on 10 June 2025. Conducted in partnership with COSCO Yangzhou Shipyard and CMD, along with WinGD’s engineering teams, the trial marks a key milestone in decarbonising maritime propulsion, according to LinkedIn India.

Pioneering Test Setup Accelerates Innovation

This achievement was made possible through the use of the world’s first single-cylinder test engine with a 920mm bore designed specifically for methanol. WinGD’s proprietary combustion and injection development techniques played a crucial role in bringing the technology to sea in record time. The setup enabled early validation of methanol mode operation, significantly shortening the development cycle.

Seamless Integration with Ship Systems

The trial verified the successful integration of the 10X92DF-M-1.0 engine with the vessel’s methanol supply and safety systems. This demonstrated not only the engine’s capability but also the robustness of operational safety measures—an essential requirement for methanol as a marine fuel.

Reliable Methanol Operation Using HFO Pilot Fuel

Performance testing confirmed the engine’s ability to operate reliably in methanol mode with heavy fuel oil (HFO) used as a pilot fuel. This dual-fuel approach allows for operational flexibility while promoting a cleaner fuel alternative, proving its viability for large-scale commercial applications.

Exceptional Trial Results Earn Industry Recognition

Notably, the engine passed all inspection and performance checks in a single round, showcasing its stability and reliability in real-world maritime conditions. The trial results received strong recognition from the shipowner, classification society, and shipyard stakeholders, affirming WinGD’s technological leadership in low-carbon shipping.

This success underlines the company’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions for the shipping industry and paves the way for wider adoption of methanol as a next-generation marine fuel.
