IMO Marks Seafarers’ Day with Bold Call for Dignity

29

Every 25 June, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the global maritime community observe the Day of the Seafarer, shining a spotlight on the crucial contributions of around 1.5 million seafarers to international trade, supply chains, and daily life—an observance officially recognized by the United Nations.

My Harassment‑Free Ship

This year’s campaign theme, “My Harassment‑Free Ship,” emphasizes the need to eradicate bullying, harassment, and discrimination onboard. Aimed at fostering safe and respectful shipboard environments, the initiative urges shipowners, flag States, maritime organizations, and crews to enforce zero‑tolerance policies and support robust reporting mechanisms. IMO has already amended training standards to require seafarers to receive education on preventing harassment and violence at sea.

As part of the effort, an interactive world map provides resources and reporting channels by flag State to empower seafarers in seeking help wherever they are. The campaign also involves social media outreach, featuring videos from seafarer influencers and maritime vloggers sharing real stories to raise awareness and encourage collective action.

IMO Secretary‑General Arsenio Dominguez delivered a video message highlighting the shared responsibility of governments, industry, and workers in building “a maritime sector anchored in equality, respect and dignity.” His call to action reflects a growing commitment to ensuring safety not just through physical measures, but also by supporting mental health and healthy workplace culture.

By celebrating seafarers and advocating for harassment‑free ships, this year’s observance marks both appreciation and a proactive push for positive change—ensuring that everyone at sea can work in dignity, respect, and security.
