The majestic full-rigged sailing ship Christian Radich provided a memorable backdrop for United European Car Carriers’ (UECC) 35th-anniversary celebration on June 11, 2025, as it gracefully cruised through the shimmering waters of the Oslofjord. This event, held in Oslo and attended by over 160 guests, including representatives from UECC’s co-owners, NYK and Wallenius Lines, staff, customers, and partners, served not only as a celebration of the company’s past but also as a powerful testament to its commitment to green shipping.
Navigating Challenges and Pioneering Transformation
UECC has successfully navigated a complex and challenging landscape, including geopolitical disruptions, economic volatility, a global pandemic, and the dual revolutions of decarbonization and digitalization. Through these “shifting tides of shipping,” the company has emerged as a pioneer in driving industry transformation, particularly in the push for sustainability.
With commercial tailwinds from evolving green regulations, UECC has firmly committed to a net-zero future, actively paving the way for a more environmentally responsible shipping industry.
CEO’s Vision and Fleet Decarbonization
In a speech to assembled guests, CEO Glenn Edvardsen highlighted UECC’s remarkable evolution. Founded in 1990 as a niche RoRo operator focused on reliable shortsea transport for the European automotive industry, the company has transformed into a “front-runner in sustainable shortsea shipping and one of the most respected carriers in the industry.”
Edvardsen emphasized that UECC’s journey has been “anything but straight, but it’s been ours. And it’s been extraordinary.” He asserted that UECC has “proven that decarbonizing shipping is not just possible – it’s essential,” achieving this without compromising on reliability, performance, or customer service. For UECC, sustainability is not a challenge but an “opportunity to lead with purpose,” setting new standards for both the shipping industry and modern, responsible companies.
UECC currently operates a 16-vessel fleet of pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs). The company has strategically expanded this fleet by acquiring more technically advanced, efficient ships and leveraging economies of scale to further reduce emissions. This expansion has enabled UECC to build a strong pan-European trading network and diversify its cargo capabilities. Beyond vehicles, the company now transports any rolling cargo, including H&H (high and heavy) cargoes and breakbulk (static cargo on mafi trailers).
Sustainability as a Cornerstone
Edvardsen underscored that “sustainability is our cornerstone,” influencing all of UECC’s operations and investments. This commitment is evident in their newbuild strategy, which includes dual and multi-fuel LNG vessels. Three of these vessels already boast battery hybrid capability, with two more similar vessels currently on order for delivery in 2028. These newbuilds are designed with several enhancements and upgraded features to improve performance, sustainability, and operational flexibility, representing the “next step forward in our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.”
Beyond vessel technology, UECC is also investing in alternative fuels like biofuel and liquefied biomethane, as well as shore power initiatives to reduce emissions further when berthed.
