Several major shipowners are investing in retrofitting projects to boost the capacity of existing vessels as an alternative to newbuilds. MSC is modifying its “MSC Oskar” class ships by raising the lashing bridges, enabling them to carry more deck-stowed containers and increasing their capacity from 19,224 TEU to 20,100 TEU. Hapag-Lloyd is upgrading seven of its “C” class vessels, elevating the deckhouse and lashing bridges to expand capacity from 9,200 TEU to 11,200 TEU. Additionally, SFL Corporation has completed structural modifications on four Maersk-operated vessels, increasing their capacity from 8,700 TEU to 9,500 TEU. These upgrades reflect a broader industry trend toward maximizing existing fleet efficiency and capacity, as reported by Container News.
